The Use Of Artıfıcıal Sweeteners and Dıetetıc Sweets In Patıents Wıth Dıabetes Mellıtus

This study was carried out to determine the use o f the types and amounts. We have also tried to find out whether the consumers have enough knowledge about artificial sweeteners and diabetic products. Data were collected from 200 patients (124 females, 76 males), 95 % o f IDDM and 80 % of NIDDM patients have been using artificial sweeteners. We have also found that 46 % of IDDM and 18 % of NIDDM subjects knew the current maximum Acceptable Daily Inkake o f artificial sweeteners. Most o f the diabetic subjects have said that they have a desire for sweet food ; 20 % o f IDDM subjects and 40 % NIDDM subjects have said they were eating normal sweets. It has been found out that 54 % of IDDM subjects and 21.5 % of NIDDM subjects have some idea about diabetic products. The results of this study emphasized that the diabetic patients do not have sufficient knowledge about artificial sweeteners and diabetic products. As a conclusion, this study showed us the necessity of giving extra knowledge about the use of artificial sweeteners and diabetic products during nutritional education of patients with diabetes mellitus.
