The Role of Cinnamon Use in Body Weight Management

Obesity is a significant global public health problem, and it increases the risk of morbidity and mortality. The significant increase in the prevalence of obesity in recent 10 years has led to search investigating to support body weight loss in addition to nutritional and lifestyle changes. As it has been for thousands of years, herbs and spices are used for their therapeutic effects. Cinnamon is one of these plants, which usually stands out with its blood sugar-regulating effect. In addition, its bioactive substances show various physiological effects. Thus, it may improve some biochemical parameters and be effective in body weight loss. In studies, cinnamon has shown beneficial effects on specific anthropometric measurements and biochemical parameters. These effects have been found in healthy individuals as well as individuals with obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Possible effect mechanisms have been proposed for these results. This review article aims to present cinnamon’s role in body weight loss with current information in the literature.
