Abstract

This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of the dietary intake of the pregnant women on the health of newborns and the feeding pattern of the babies during first six months. The study was conducted on 100 pregnant women between the ages of 16 to 40 years. Among the women 98 % were house-wifes Most of the families were immigrated from the rural areas. Dietary intake of the pregnant women and their families \vere determined monthly. Results of food intake data have shown that most of the families and pregnant women can not meet their nutritional needs. Enlargement of thyroid glands and dental problems were the most frequently occurred nutritional deficiency signs, which were found among the pregnant vvomen, 52 % of pregnant women have hemoglobin concentrations lovver than 11.0 g / 100 mİ blood. Newborns and the babies up to the age of 6 months were examined routinely in respect to their physical and psychomotor developments. The effects of breast feeding were evaluated. Among the nevvborns 11 % had birth weight lower than 2500 grams.
