Abstract

In this study the variables that may affect the hemoglobin levels are deseribed in a sample group of 315 university students. The mean hemoglobin value is found to be 13.84 g/dl for males and 12.66g/dl for females. 22% of the study group had hemoglobin levels below normal values. Hemoglobin levels were not associated with the physical strueture and sporting activities of the students. Smokers had significantly higher hemoglobin levels than non-smokers. Also the mean hemoglobin values of the highest income group is found to be significantly higher than the lowest income group^ There was an association between the low hemoglobin levels and the presence of any symptom of anemia in the study group. This result is concludcd that presence of anemia symptoms may be used as a sensitivc sereening test during the community surveys.
