Abstract

In this study the breast-feeding applications of 580 women who gave birth at Diyarbakır Maternity Hospital, according to their basic educational levels, have been established. The investigation findings have shown that 41.38 % of the babies have been suckled immediately after birth, the first food of 43.96 % has been mother milk. Although the educational level of the mother didn’t necessarily effect the first breastfeeding time of the baby (p>0.05), it is effective to determine the first food given and frequency of the breast-feeding (p< 0.00l) Quite the contrary to expectations, it has been determined that the mothers who have taken high school and higher educations have been mistaken more at breast-feeding applications. For example, despite 71.60 % of these mothers knew that colostrum is usefuli, the mother milk giving of only 38.27 % of the mothers immediately after birth show that educational deficiencies exist in this subject. No meaningful correlation has been found between the form of the baby nutrition and mothers educational level (p<0.05). The fact that only 17.10 % of women forming the samples has been educated on mother milk put fonvard the necessity of continuous and widespread education.
