Abstract

In this study, food expenditure, the extent and causes of food losses and use of leftover foods were investigated in 14.351 families from different socio-economic levels of Ankara. Income levels of families per month were 488.300 TL, 924.380 TL, and 1.510.000 TL, in low, medium and high socio, economic groups, respectively. In the same families monthly food expenditures were 246.916 TL, 281.558 TL and 375.950 TL. respectively. As income level increases the expenditure of food decreases. In low socio economic groups, while cereals take the high proportion of expenditure for food, expenditure for meat and milk decreases. Families from high socio-economic groups spend less money for cereals than for animal foods.
