Abstract

This study was carried out to determine interrelationship between premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and nutrition o f800 married women aged betvveen 19-49 year s old in different socio-economic status. Significant dijferences betvveen PMS-A, PMS-H , PMS-D severity in group of low, mediıım and high socio-economic status were foıuıd (p<0.05). This dijference was not seen to PMT-C (p>0.05). The total premenstrual syndrome score was foıtnd 11.98+0.41, 18.55±0.46 and 11.03±0.87 in three socio-economic groups respectively (p<0.01). Also the consumption levels o f energy, atıimal protein, ironfrom an i mal soıırces, zinc, vitamin A and vitamin C were different among the groups (p<0.01). İn spite o f their adequate food consıımption, the percentages o f PMS sympoms were higher in medium socio-economic group. It is concluded that, nutrition is not an independetıt factor o f PMS etiology but also the other factors such as stress, parity, hormonal imbalances should be considered.
