Assessment Of Regınal Fat Dıstrıbutıon In Adults By Magnetıc Resonance Imagıng and Anthropometrıc Measurements

This study was carried out on 107 adults attended to Ankara Betemar computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) center. While 50.5 % of the patients were male, 49.5 % were females. A variety of data on the characteristics of subject were collected and anthropometric measurements such as body weight, height, waist and hip circumferences were measured. BMI was used to define the ideal weight for height. MRI was done on 05 T SİGNA (GE Wisconsin) equipment and the fat thickness on waist and hip were assessed in milimetres. As a result 50.0 % of the males and 59.5 % of females were found to be slightly obese. An increase in circumference measurements were determined with the increase in weight. MRI showed a similar result. All the measurements (such as weight, BMI, waist and hip circumferences) except height and waist-hip ratio were found to be statistically significant between overweight and obese women (p< 0.05). Relationships between circumference measurements and MRI measures were found statistically significant in male and female subjects (p < 0.05). We may conclude that MRI is a good predictive method in the assessment of fat distribution. Also it has no risk of radiation, it shows a good correlation with other anthropometric measurements. Become the technique is relatively expensive and time consuming it is usually still reseived for research. At usual life usage of waist-hip ratio is more practical and inexpensive.
