Abstract

The study was performed in 87 pregnant women living in Hasköy and 112 pregnant women living in Gülveren Ankara, to determine the prevalence o f anemia and some factors causing anemia. Hemoglobin levels of the pregnant women has been examined by counter method. The prevalence of anemia in Hasköy was found to be 39.1%, while this prevalence was determined at 13.4% in Gülveren district. This difference between the two districts might be due to the high coverage of antenatal care in Gülveren area. 97.8% of the anemia in pregnancy in Hasköy and all the anemia cases in Gülveren was determined as hypochromic microcytic anemia which is most prevalent in iron deficiency. The relationship between anemia and conjunctival paleness determined in physical examination was statistically significant. There were no significant relationship between anemia and the other variables such as socioeconomic status, fertility histoiy' o f the pregnant women, food consumption etc.
