Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to determine the relationship between anthropometric measures, biochemical markers, nutritional status, emotional distress and depression status of Type 2 diabetic patients. Subjects and Methods: Study sample was consisted of a total of 165 patients who applied to the private hospital in Ankara with a diagnosis of diabetes, aged 19-64 years. Their emotional distress scores were measured by Problem Areas in Diabetes Questionnaire (PAID) and depression scores were measured by Beck Depression Scales that were culturally adaptated and validated in Turkish patients. Results: Cereal-bread group (302.8±118.7 g), total fat (24.5±26.5 g), sweet foods (14.1±18.3 g) and energy (1779±331.2 kcal/day), carbohydrate (51.6±4.9% energy), protein (16.7±2.2% energy) and saturated fat (25.3±7.3 g) intakes were higher in patients having high PAID score (≥33) than those having low PAID score (<33) (p<0.05). Positive corelations (p<0.05) seen with Beck Scores and carbohydrate intake, emotional distress and energy, carbohydrate intake. Conclusion: Evaluating the association of emotional distress of patients with diabetes and nutritional status during their rutin controls would be beneficial to adherence to dietary treatment and glycemic control.
