Evaluation of the Nutritional Status of Type I and Type II Diabetics Attending Diabetes Summer Camp

In the 38"’ 15-day Diabetes Camp vvhich is organized by İstanbul Diabetes Association in 2003 in Kuşadası, there were total 92 diabetic people; 50 type I (56% men, 44% women) between 4-59 years old and 42 type II (26% men, 73.8% women) between 30-68 years old. Forty point five % o f type II diabetes mellitus people were using not only oral antidiabetic agents (OAD) but also insülin injection. In this 15-day camp some educational programmes are applied to the diabetics according to their age, illness, insülin, OAD and nutritional status. Energy requirement o f each diabetic person has computed according to their age, sex and psysical activity level. Also they are allovved to choose their food from the open buffet due to the fo o d exchange list. Through the camp, hypoglycemia is seen in 74% (1.4 times /15 day) o f type I, 23.8% (2.4 times/subject/15day) o f type II diabetics. Ketone bodies in urine aren ’t seen in type II diabetics, but seen in 28% o f type I diabe tics (0.5 times/subject/week). At the end o f the camp the weight loss is approximately 2 kg in type II and between 330 g-1 kg in type I diabetics. According to their one day food consumption, the food choice from open buffet, diabetics prefer less carbonhydrate and fıberous foods but more protein concerning foods. Eventually in diabetes camp there should be given most importance to the nutritiorı education and diabetic people should attend to fo o d preparation practices. Diabetic people 's knowledge level about the diabetes should be determined at fırst, therı the education given in camp should be evaluated before and after the camp.
