Abstract

The incidences of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MS) in childhood continue to rise currently. Diet is a key factor in the formation and treatment of MS. The aim of this study is comparing dietary patterns of children with and without MS. This study is held on the 308 children and adolescents living in Kocaeli between the ages of 1118 years, who were overweight and obese. A questionnaire determining dietary status was used, their anthropometrical measurements and blood samples were taken. As a result, the amount of consumption of cheese, eggs, bread, grains, total fat and cola drinks of children who has MS is higher (p<0.05). There was a correlation between some food groups with some lipid and insulin parameters. To prevent the occurence of obesity and MS in childhood, programs based on nutrition interventions need to be developed.
