Abstract

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders mostly common in childhood which is characterized by difficulty in inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsive behaviors. Diagnostic criteria, geographic origins and methods of the studies were significantly associated with ADHD prevalence rates. Because of this, its worldwide prevalence is over 2%, but the rate reaches 18% in some settings. The etiology of ADHD is not clear but genetic, biological, environmental and psychosocial factors have been suggested to be associated with the etiology. The traditional therapy of disease consists of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. Furthermore, supplementation of vitamins, minerals and omega 3 fatty acids to children with ADHD is shown to improve symptoms. On the other hand, the relation between ADHD and nutrition is not yet clear. Further and wider ranged studies are needed.
