Aim: This research article examines data related to undergraduate programs in Nutrition and Dietetics in Turkey, based on the Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS). It evaluates program characteristics, quotas, minimum required teaching staff numbers, and their fields of expertise for the commencement and continuation of education in this field.
Subjects and Method: The assessment of program and quota numbers for Nutrition and Dietetics Undergraduate Programs was sourced from the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) page. Quotas for “Health Bachelor Completion,” and “Vertical Transfer Exam” were gathered from relevant websites. The minimum required number of teaching staff members and their areas of expertise were obtained from the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) Academic website.
Results: Based on the YKS-2022 results, there are a total of 116 programs across 102 universities (53 state and 49 private universities, including 7 from Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)) offering education in Nutrition and Dietetics, with a combined quota of 6493. According to YKS-2021 and YKS-2022, respectively, 9.3% (642 students) and 8.4% (545 students) of the total quota are filled through Health Bachelor Completion and Vertical Transfer Exam. The success rankings for all programs, based on YKS-2022, range from a low of 1,428,616 to a high of 58,426. Within Nutrition and Dietetics Undergraduate Programs, in 2021, 47 out of 101 programs (46.5%) and in 2022, 33 out of 106 programs (31.1%) did not meet the criteria for the minimum required number of teaching staff and their fields of expertise for the commencement and continuation of education.
Conclusion: To address the challenges faced by Nutrition and Dietetics Undergraduate Programs, it is recommended to develop solutions, formulate action plans, and coordinate efforts with relevant departments to initiate effective measures for resolution.
