Abstract

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, despite significant advances in its diagnosis and treatment. The incidence of colorectal cancer, which is the third most common cancer worldwide, increases in individuals under the age of 50 years. Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment methods, the prognosis of colon cancer still remains poor. Increasing prevalence of colorectal cancer in recent years; has led to the discovery of many new, effective and promising compounds. Herbal nutraceuticals; It has become the focus of attention in recent years due to its harmless structures, versatile abilities to prevent treatment resistance, potential to heal harmful side effects of cancer treatments, low costs, and ease of use. Berberine and evodiamine, which are among these nutraceuticals, are two types of alkaloids with important health effects. These compounds generally have anticarcinogenic effect; it shows through controlling the growth and survival of cells, inducing apoptosis, inhibiting migration, controlling the cell cycle, down-modulating the expression of many cancer-associated genes, influencing many cancer-associated pathways, and promoting autophagy. Studies on the effects of berberine and evodiamine on colon cancer are limited and more studies are needed.
