Krill Oil Supplementation and New Scientific Evidences

Krill oil is an extract obtained from species of marine, Euphausia Superba. It is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Recently, many observers focused on this oil because of its potential benefits. It contains eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an antioxidant-antiinflammatory substance astaxantin and a lipotropic substance phosphatidylcholine. It is reported that consumption of krill oil may have anti-inflammatory, anti-atherosclerotic effects and benefits on glucose tolerance, mental health and menstrual cycle problems. It is reported that recommended dose is 1-3 g/day. Toxic dose has not been determined, but consumption more than 3 g/day may have gastrointestinal complications. European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reported that according to long-term human studies 1 g/day omega-3 consumption has benefits on human health and it is considered as safe.
